“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3 NIV
Beatitudes are blessings which were listed by Jesus in the sermon of the Mount(Matthew 5:3-11). The word "beatitude" comes from the Latin beatitudo, meaning "blessedness." The phrase "blessed are" in each of the beatitudes implies a current state of happiness or well-being.In other words, Jesus was saying "divinely happy and fortunate are" those who possess these inward qualities. While speaking of a current "blessedness," each pronouncement also promises a future reward.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The word,''poor in spirit,'' most likely Jesus was speaking of our spiritual condition of poverty- the knowledge of our need for God. The Kingdom of heaven, refers to people who recognize God as their King.
There was a doctrinal error in some of the people of God, who for some reasons were taught; being poor in spirit, meant to be poor in the physical state without owning much or having wealth as the people of the world. The Bible shows the account of humble people such as Abraham, who had enough fortune to fight with five kings and overcome them. The account of Isaac who had been blessed until the king Abimelek of the Philistines envied him, asked Isaac to move away from their land because he became more powerful than them.[Genesis 14, 26:12-16]
This morning, God wants you to know that being poor in the spirit, means your recognition of your need for Him. Regardless what you possess, which level of education you gained so far, which title you have been holding in the society but one thing you need to know is that without God you can't do nothing.
When you know that your earthly title and riches won't help you to know God, you will learn to put them aside and humble yourself before Him. We all sinned and fall short of the glory of God, we all need the Savior of our soul to fed us that we may satisfy our spiritual hunger. We have the poverty in our spirits, we need God in each moment of our lives that we may help us overcome the troubles of this life.
