“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Exodus 20:16 NIV
According to David Guzik's we can break the ninth commandment through slander, tale-bearing, creating false impressions, by silence, by questioning the motives behind someone’s actions, or even by flattery.
“Slander is the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation. A man guilty of slander ruins a reputation which may never be regained, and causes lifelong suffering.” Tale-bearing is repeating a report about a person without careful investigation.
To repeat a story which brings discredit and dishonor to another person without making sure of the facts, is breaking this commandment. Inappropriate silence is when someone utters a falsity about another and a third person is present who knows that statement to be untrue but, for reasons of fear or being disliked, remains quiet, that third person is as guilty of breaking this law as if he had told a lie.
This morning, God wants you to stop being a false witness. Paul wrote to Colossians that they do not need lie to each other, since they have taken off their old self with its practices, Colossians 3:9. Jesus himself was the victim of false witness, Mark 14:57. Have you ever thought that what you call a white lie has caused pain to someone out there?
Have you ever think how it feels to be lied about something? The Bible calls Satan the father of lies, when he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies, John 8:44. In other words when we speak lies we encourage his work and identify ourselves as his for hand supporters.
We need to change and start speaking truth with one another, God is watching and listening every false action and word which we speak. Just imagine what a startling revelation it would be if a tape recording could be played of all that every church member has said about his fellow members in one week! May God help us.
****Morning Prayer****
Pray this prayer with me by faith and God is going to answer your prayer....
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for your Word. I confess all the lies which I have spoken before You. Please forgive me for being a false witness in many occasions, help me to say nothing but the truth from this day forward. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
