TEN COMMANDMENTS 2

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.  You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Exodus 20:4-6 NIV

In this second commandment, God does not only prohibits the worship of false idols; but also deals with anything created for the purpose of being worshiped. In those days as in ours own-worship was tied on the idealized images or even images in our minds. God would not allow those images to replace Him in our lives.

God says here that, He is a jealous God, God's jealousy is love in action. He doesn't want to share the heart of a man with anything or anyone, not because He is selfish and wants all human beings for Himself; but because He understands that we cannot fulfill the purpose of our lives if we are  not connected to Him. God is not jealous of us: He is jealous for us.

Punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Him. This does not mean God punishes us directly for the sins of our fore fathers. The important point to note is, ''those who hate Me''- if the descendants love God, they will not have the sin of the fathers visited on them. So everyone will be judged according to his work before God.

This morning, God wants you to know He is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth, (John 4:24). This commandment does not forbid making something for artistic purposes but it does forbid making something as the aid of worship.

Start worshiping God in Spirit and truth, stop laying back in your old religious tradition of worship. God does not look like anything which you have ever seen made by man, the work of human hands. He is nothing like anything in the sky, water or field. He is God who created all things including you and me. You must worship Him in Spirit and truth.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for your Word. Lord I'm asking that You may help me to worship You in the Spirit and truth. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
